Wild card Patrick John Tierro stunned fourth seed Roberto Ortega-Olmedo of Spain, 6-1, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), to barge into the singles semifinals of the $15,000 International Tennis Federation Philippine Men’s Futures on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.
Tierro arranged a Final Four meeting with eight pick Karunuday Singh of India, a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (5) winner over No. 2 Chen Ti of Taiwan. Tierro blasted compatriot Calvin Charles Canlas in the first round and Adam Sanjurjo Hermida of Spain in the second round.
In doubles, No. 1 Filipino-American Ruben Gonzales and Thai partner Sonchat Ratiwatana overpowered Ivo Minar of Czech Republic and Mohd Assri Merzuki of Malaysia in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2, to earn the first finals slot.
Gonzales and Ratiwatana nipped Taiwanese netters Ho Chin-Jen and Hung Jui-Chen in the opening round (6-3, 6-3) and Hermida and Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals, 6-7 (7), 7-5, 10-5.
Gonzales and Ratiwana will be meeting the winner in the other semifinal game between No. 3 Christopher Rungkat of Indonesia and Chen Ti of Taiwan, and the unseeded tandem of Singh and Ivo Klec of Slovakia.
