• Network coverage shutdown govt idea

Telecommunication giants Globe Communication Inc. and Smart Communication Inc. on Friday said it was the government–through the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)—that decided to shut down network coverage every time Pope Francis passes through an area in the course of the pontiff’s state and apostolic visit to the Philippines from January 15 to 19.

In an advisory, Globe said, “We anticipate the arrival of Pope Francis in our country, we’ve installed additional cell sites within Manila, (the cities of) Makati and Pasay in anticipation of surge in demand. However, the overwhelming number of people using our network in the said areas may result in signal and interconnection difficulties.”

Ramon Isberto, head of Public Affairs of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co, Smart and Sun said, “In compliance with the order from the government authorities, the cellular services of Smart and Sun Cellular were temporarily suspended today (January 16) in Metro Manila including some municipalities of nearby provinces.”
