• ‘Never safer’ NFL can’t stop Borland health fear exit


    The National Football League countered San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland’s decision to retire at age 24 over brain damage fears, saying Tuesday the sport “has never been safer.” Borland, a rookie who led the 49ers in tackles last season, turned his back on a four-year deal worth nearly $3 million because of his concerns over the long-term impact of repeated head trauma, meeting with concussion researchers.
