    ZAMBOANGA CITY: Brigadier General Gerardo Barrientos Jr. on Wednesday formally assumed office as commander of the 1st Infantry Division in Zamboanga del Sur.

    Barrientos, who was the assistant commander of the 4th Infantry Division in Cagayan de Oro City in northern Mindanao, replaced Major General Virgilio Trinidad, who now heads the Northern Luzon Command.

    Philippine Army acting chief Major General Romulo Cabantac, Jr. presided over the change of command held at the division headquarters at Camp Major Cesar Sang-an in Labangan town.

    Barrientos, a bemedalled army officer, was among the 48 generals and flag officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines promoted in March.
