Loling T. Ordoñez sent me the following cultural information.

Young and gifted composers and performing artists were introduced and featured last month by the Metro Manila Concert Orchestra (MMCO) in a concert dubbed “Music UnderKonstruction” as a special initiative of MMCO’s 15th Crystal Anniversary.

The new composers were Jimuel Dave Dagta, Jourdann Petalver, Timothy Kyle Siaton and Jem Robert Talaroc.

Now on its 8th year, the MMCO’s “Music UnderKonstruction” Orchestra Reading is a program conceptualized by MMCO founding director, Josefino Chino Toledo. The program has been supported by a grant from the National Commission for Culture and Arts for the past eight years.

Professor Toledo commented, “It was created as a venue for young Filipino composers to experience and gain practical knowledge working with an orchestra conductor and musicians. MMCO is the only Philippine orchestra that provides this unique opportunity for young Filipino composers.”

The MU is an annual musical treat of MMCO for the new generation of Filipino composers. Since the inception of this MMCO pacesetting program, 33 original works have been produced. The MU is MMCO’s affirmation of its social responsibility towards the development of Filipino and world music.

Capping the evening was the world premier of a commissioned work by the MMCO Foundation written by the distinguished, multi-awarded composer, Prof. Alfredo Buenventura.

Titled Maharlika, the composition was made possible by a grant endowed to the MMCO Foundation by the heirs of Vicente Rufino and dedicated to the memory of the late Conchita Sunico, dedicated sponsor of the arts.

    Erlinda’s book, Jenny’s Poems
Charmed by Life, Charming Life, a biography of Erlinda Villanueva by Visitacion “Chit” de la Torre, relates her fulfilled and fruitful life. Erlinda is the first woman CPA of SGV, a top auditing firm and its first woman partner after ten and a half years of tenure.

The big boss Washington Sycip attended the book launch. Also in attendance were her Holy Spirit alumnae, UN co-workers, Makati Zonta friends, SGV staffers, and “unclassified friends” as emcee Marily Orosa called each group for a photo session with Erlinda. Also present, among others, were former Ambassadors Isabel Wilson, Delia Albert, Beng Puyat and Justice Romero.

Erlinda’s brothers Bert, Gaby and Rudy virtually managed the Manila Chronicle where I began my journalistic career. All the Villanuevas have distinguished themselves in management, and Erlinda, retired, continues to manage her private life magnificently as the book testifies.
Jenny Gordon Russell (Mrs. Jan Peter Wallum) is included in the book Women Writers of the Year 2014, where her lovely, sensitive poems appear along with those of twenty other distinguished poets. A former dancer who portrayed the title role of the Merry Widow in the National Theater of Thailand, Jenny is also a lyricist.

A member of the British Empire, she is primarily loved and admired by Filipinos for setting up the Entrepreneur Volunteer Assistance Charity Foundation which helped victims of Mt. Pinatubo Volcano eruption in 1991, and continues its charity work nation-wide.
