THE final prototype of the new jeepney under the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program will be released in the first week of September, according to the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
“What DTI approves will be the basic design of the jeepney,” LTFRB Board Member Aileen Lizada said in a radio interview on Tuesday.
According to Lizada, the government and various stakeholders are conducting consultations to come up with the final prototype.
“Consultations with government agencies, jeepney builders and car manufacturers are continuously being conducted, after which consultations with the jeepney operators will be done before the specifications will be adopted as a Philippine National Standard for customized local road vehicle by August,” Lizada earlier told reporters in a text message.
“There will be a number of jobs in this jeepney modernization. TESDA is there for those who want to be a mechanic,” Lizada said.
“Local manufacturers will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of the new jeepney,” she said.
About 28,346 units to be subsidized by P80,000 each will be available in 2018, Lizada added.
The three pilot areas to benefit from the subsidy are the Senate-PICC; Taguig-Pasig; and the Pateros-Fort Bonifacio routes.
