New port at Lapuz side to open next month

ILOILO CITY: Ferries and roll on-roll off (roro) vessels plying Iloilo-Bacolod and vice versa, and roro vessels to Manila, Palawan and other areas will move to the other side of the river at the Lapuz side starting September 5. This was announced by Senate President Franklin Drilon after being informed by officials of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) in the completion of construction of a new port project for ferries and roro vessels in a move to decongest the Iloilo River wharf. Drilon said no vessel will be allowed to use the Muelle Loney side of the river and he advised DOTC and PPA not to schedule any project by December 2014. The port was built in Barangay Progreso and already completed are berthing facilities and port terminal building.
