• New service helps Pinoys buy affordable medicines

Whether it is because the Philippines is an archipelago of 7,100 islands, a former US colony, a poor nation, extremely centralized or a combination of these factors, part of the country’s condition involves having to live far away from loved ones.

We all have a relative or even several relatives abroad. We also have relatives who live in the provinces. But no matter where they are, it is very Filipino to maintain close emotional and even financial ties with these relatives that make up our extended family.

Unfortunately, in many Filipino families, medicine is not a top priority until something bad happens. That is why it is not uncommon to hear of OFWs who send large amounts of hard-earned money home, only to have a family member contact them later following a health crisis that requires more money.

In the case of maintenance medications, it is typical of Filipinos to buy medicines until they start feeling better. After that, they discontinue taking these medicines despite doctor’s orders. This is a very unhealthy and dangerous practice.

It is with this set of uniquely Filipino circumstances in mind that MedPadala was developed. Through this service, OFWs and breadwinners can allot a part of the money they send home for medicines without worrying that this will be used for other things.

MedPadala is a unique electronic gift check (GC) that can be used only at Generika Drugstores. The gift certificate can be purchased online or at Generika outlets and a PIN and password are sent to the customer via SMS and email. The customer can then send these codes to their loved ones to buy medicines or medical supplies.

The GCs were conceived to make it easier for Filipinos to buy the medicines they need at affordable prices. Unlike others, these GCs have no expiration date. What’s more, they don’t need to be used in a single transaction and can be consumed as needed over several visits. The PIN and password can be passed on to multiple users.

For as long as a balance remains on the PIN, the GC can be used to make purchases. The buyer of the GC can also track its usage. That person can see when the GC was used, how much was used, the remaining amount, and where the medicines were purchased.

Because of these features and the fact that they can only be used for medicine and medical supplies, MedPadala GCs serve as an affordable insurance policy. When you send a GC, you are assured that it will be used only for medicines when it is needed.

Aside from this, Generika also offers free on site consultation and reliable medical tests that cost a fraction of what they would cost even at government hospitals. This is line with the company’s policy of making life better for Filipinos.
