• New Zealand suspends aid to Nauru over rights concerns

WELLINGTON: New Zealand on Wednesday suspended foreign aid to Nauru over concerns about civil rights abuses in the small Pacific island nation. Wellington is a key donor to Nauru but Foreign Minister Murray McCully said it had decided to put a NZ$1.2 million ($770,000) annual contribution to the country’s justice sector on hold. McCully said New Zealand could no longer support the island’s legal system, which has recently been used to suspend opposition leaders and enact laws clamping down on basic freedoms. McCully received assurances from Nauru in July about human rights and the administration of justice but said they had not restored his confidence.
