• Newspaper columnist slain in Ilocos Norte

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte: A newspaper columnist of the Ilocos Times, the longest running local newspaper in Ilocos Norte, died after he was shot several times Friday night in Pasuquin town.

Steve Tumaneng Bareiro, 52, a resident of 235 Rizal Street Laoag City, was shot several times by a certain Oliver “Boyet” Doctor at the “Ploy’s Tambayan” at Poblacion 2, Pasuquin using a caliber 9mm pistol, according to Ilocos Norte Provincial Police Director Senior Supt. Albert Ocon.

Bareiro was reportedly with his daughter, Maria Stephany, and were buying food when the suspect approached them and opened fire.

Ocon said it was the columnist’s daughter who identified the gunman and she is now under very strict security by authorities.

The columnist never reached the hospital alive, Ocon said, adding that they are now searching for Doctor, who fled after the shooting.

Ocon said they are pursuing possible leads including the angle of a possible love triangle as motive of the killing. It was reported that the gunman’s former wife, Criselda Aguinaldo, is Bareiro’s current girlfriend.

The scene of the crime operatives found at least 14 empty shells at the crime scene.

Ocon said that the suspect will soon be arrested since he was properly identified. He added that they are now preparing to file charges against the suspect.
