President Benigno Aquino 3rd has chosen Western Samar Rep. Mel Senen Sarmiento as the new head of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
“Yes, it’s Mel Sarmiento. I offered the post to him… This is subject to the confirmation of the Commission on Appointments,” Aquino said in an interview that was broadcast over government-run PTV-4 on Tuesday.
Sarmiento, the Liberal Party secretary-general, will replace Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas 2nd, who resigned after his selection as the administration party’s standard-bearer was announced by the President last July.
Sarmiento was vice mayor of Calbayog City,Western Samar, from 1992 to 1995.
He ran for mayor but lost in 1995 but he eventually became mayor in 2001 and served three terms before running for congressman in 2010 representing the First District of Western Samar.
While mayor, he was elected secretary-general of the League of Cities of the Philippines.
