The Inter-Agency Task Force on Securing Energy Facilities (IATFSEF), headed by the Department of Energy (DOE), announced that it has successfully restored Tower No. 25 in Lanao del Sur, connecting the generated power from Agus Hydroelectric Plant Units 1 and 2.
Restoration of the facility allows the grid operator to transmit the electricity produced by state-owned Agus 1 and Agus 2 hydro power plants, with a combined installed capacity of 260MW, to the rest of the Mindanao grid.
The facility became inoperational since Dec. 24 last year after it was bombed by unidentified elements. Its repair and restoration were hampered after claimants to the property where the facility stands – the Sambitori family – prevented National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) repair team access to the tower site.
The IATFSEF commenced restoration activities on March 5, or 24 hours after a ruling by the Regional Trial Court of Lanao del Sur was served to the Sambitori family, directing them to allow rehabilitation to proceed smoothly in their claimed property.
“With the cooperation from all stakeholders to restore Tower No. 25, Mindanaoans have again enjoyed about 80 megawatts of cheaper and cleaner power supply from the Agus plants. This will substantially result in reduction of rotating brownouts in the affected areas,” Energy Secretary Zenaida Monsada said.
