NHL, NBA postpone games as blizzard hits US

WASHINGTON: Two more National Hockey League games were postponed on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) by a major snowstorm that struck the US East Coast and forced the NBA and NHL to reschedule contests.

Saturday’s scheduled Philadelphia Flyers game at the New York Islanders was called off because of the heavy snow, high winds and bitter cold that struck New York.

Similar conditions in Washington forced the postponement of Sunday afternoon’s scheduled game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.

No makeup date was announced for either contest.

The NBA on Friday postponed Utah’s scheduled game at Washington, for which no makeup date was set, and Boston’s scheduled game at Philadelphia, which was moved to Sunday night.

Friday NHL game with the Anaheim Ducks at Washington also was postponed.

The storm dumped ice and snow on North Carolina but the NFL’s scheduled playoff game between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals will be staged as scheduled. Conditions in Charlotte will allow for melting well before kickoff.

The Duquesne University basketball team was stuck in a traffic jam on the Pennsylvania Turnpike about 80 miles from Pittsburgh. The team was aided with food and water by area emergency management officials but was preparing for a second night stranded on the team bus.
