Donnie Nietes beat Mexican Carlos Velarde via eighth round technical knockout to keep his World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight crown on Saturday night at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City.
Nietes (34-1-4 win-loss-draw card with 20 knockouts) extended his reign as the world champion in two divisions since 2007.
In other matches, Milan Melindo of Cebu defeated Mexican Saul Juares via unanimous decision in the Intercontinental Boxing Federation (IBF) junior flyweight elimination round.
Prince Albert Pagara, on the other hand, won over Mexico’s Raul Hirales via unanimous decision to keep his IBF international featherweight crown.
Former WBO minimumweight champion Merlito Sabillo, meanwhile, lost to Faris Nenggo of Indonesia by fourth round knockout. Sabillo dropped to 23-2-1 with 12 knockouts.
AJ Banal, for his part, won over Thailand’s Maxsaisai Sithsaithong via unanimous decision to improve to 32-2-1 with 22 knockouts.
Meanwhile, Mark Magsayo, 19, of Tagbilaran City defeated Korean foe Moon Sun Jung via technical knockout with 1:56 in round two to remain undefeated with nine wins (seven by knockout).
