THE ruling Liberal Party (LP)’s Presidential bet for 2016 Interior Secretary Mar Roxas 2nd on Monday welcomed at least nine incumbent lawmakers during the new members’ oath taking ceremony held at the Liberal Party headquarters in Cubao, Quezon City.
House Deputy Minority Leader Carol Lopez of You Against Corruption party-list said the list includes Ana Go of Isabela (formerly of Nacionalista party); Philip Pichay of Surigao, Damian Mercado of Southern Leyte, Fredercik Abueg of Palawan and Catherine Barcelona Reyes of Camarines Norte (formerly of National Union Party); Magtanggol Guniguindo of Valenzuela City (formerly of Lakas-CMD) and Leopoldo Bataoil of Pangasinan (formerly of Nationalist People’s Coalition).
The nine new members of the LP also pledged their allegiances to support Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas’ Presidential bid in the 2016 polls.
“Ang partidong kinabibilangan natin ay may tinatayuang mga matibay na mga prinsipyo. Dito po sa aming partido, wine-welcome namin kayong lahat. Wine-welcome namin kayo sa laban na ito (The party we belong to stands for solid principles. We welcome you to our party and to this fight [for good governance]),” he said.
Roxas cited that the LP has a long history of advocating transparency, accountability and integrity in the Philippine government as evidenced by the Aquino administration’s platform of good governance.
“In this fight, we will fight for what is right, and that is the welfare of our people. We won’t back down,” Roxas added.
Binay not on NPC’s list
As this developed, a source revealed that Vice President Jejomar Binay is not in the running for the endorsement of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) for the party’s Presidential bet for 2016.
The source, who refused to be named because of lack of authority to speak on the matter, noted that Roxas will meet with the NPC again this week—the second meeting between Roxas and the second largest political party in the country.
Pre-election survey leader Sen. Grace Poe and her perceived 2016 running mate Sen. Francis Escudero already met with NPC twice, while Binay only met with NPC once.
“We also consult with other candidates, but we think the party will be choosing between Secretary Roxas and Senator Poe,” the source said.
