2017 GT-R Philippine Release
“Astig ‘di ba?” were the words uttered by the great Hiroshi Tamura, Nissan Chief Product Specialist as he unveiled the 2017 Nissan GT-R during the 6th Philippine International Motor Show held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on September 14, 2016, and again at the red-carpet lined, awards-night-esque Nissan Quezon Avenue Showroom the following Friday, September 16, 2016. The unveiling of the sporting car legend in the GT-R marked the new generation of the highly decorated and arguable most controversial car in motoring history. The new GT-R takes on the legendary ranks of its predecessors and creates for itself a whole new level of sports cars.
“Astig” it was and indeed a sight to behold as the deep orange sheen of the new GT-R flashed upon the public’s eyes and immediately struck a confident beat into the hearts of each and every person in the vicinity. The legend of the Nissan GT-R seemingly transcended the boundary of generations; from the youngest of kids, young enough to not be aware how cars work to the most primed individuals – having seen more wonders on this earth than most, the new GT-R was able to bring back the wonder in these time-tested eyes and the vigor in these worn-down hearts.
History, Notoriety and Infamy
The storied history of the Nissan GT-R is riddled with hearsay controversy of a nationwide ban, all the while sporting arguably the most powerful horses under its hood with undeniable Japanese engineering ingenuity in the original Nissan Skyline GT-R – due to which it has risen to fame as being part of the top tier of performance vehicles and for some, the best sports car to have come out from the eastern hemisphere.
The corresponding infamy and notoriety of the GT-R gave it a unique appeal that grabbed the attention of western pop culture. Establishing its status as an icon, the GT-R has landed titular roles in Hollywood productions. One of the more notable ones being the vehicle of choice of late actor and real-life car enthusiast Paul Walker in the “Fast and Furious” movie series. The same can be said to the local scene as media bodies, car enthusiasts, athletes and celebrities gathered to witness its debut to Philippine streets.
The Beast at its Best
As the covers were lifted for the first time, the most striking and noticeable feature of the new GT-R is its hood; specifically the intimidatingly aggressive V-motion grille that has been significantly enlarged and reinforced for better engine cooling and enhanced stability during high-speed driving. The familiar wind-cutting shape and signature four-ring taillights still defines its profile while its side sills have been pushed out, improved body work, side air vents next to quad exhaust tips all improve the car’s aerodynamics – “Each and every line on this car has a reason behind it. Nothing was done just for design. Everything on this car has a meaning,” explained Tamura.
Cutting Edge Performance
Unsurprisingly highly anticipated and well-received, the new GT-R begs to ask what is indeed not to like about it? Building on the established success of its predecessor in the 2007 GT-R, the 2017 model promises nothing less than what is expected from this legendary namesake. “The new GT-R delivers heart-pounding driving experience at all times on any road – it is even more potent than before.” explained Tamura.
The new GT-R features the award-winning VR38DETT engine, 3.8-liter V6, 24-valve twin-turbocharged “Takumi handcrafted” and certified powerhouse that delivers 570 ps (562 horsepower) at 6,800 rpm with 637 Newton-meters of torque – The definition of Takumi expertise. It boasts an improved output as result of individual ignition-timing control of the cylinders and extra boost from the turbochargers; superior raw power mated with a thoroughly refined 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. All set confidently on even more improved cornering ability, more rigid body structure, and more stable suspension on 20-inch wheels that stay true to the time tested handling superiority reputation of the GT-R.
Although the aforementioned specifications of the GT-R places it way up on the list of pure performance vehicles, the main selling point of this new model is the amount of attention given to the riding and driving experience: claimed to be the most comfortable model to date, the 2017 GT-R exhibits a smoother, thus better, ride quality and more efficient noise cancellation technology hidden under sophisticated quality material finishes and interior treatment and shall be available in Katsura Orange, Vibrant Red, Peral Black, Ultimate Silver, Gun Metallic, Pearl White and Pearl Blue.
The rebirth of the legendary Nissan GT-R, carrying an unmistakable lineage of record-breaking performance and world-renowned engineering excellence, shall mark a new era of legendary excellence.
With a less-than-friendly but undeniably-worthy investment (for those with the capability at least) drive away tag of P7.350 million, the new Nissan GT-R will be available exclusively at the Nissan High Performance Center in Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.
