LINGAYEN, Pangasinan: National Master (NM) Roel Abelgas emerged as champion in the open category of the 5th Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup Open Chess Tournament held at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center and Narciso Ramos and Civic Center here.
Abelgas who hails from Manila received P25,000 and a trophy in the open tournament graced by nearly 300 wood pushers from various parts of the country as part of the provincial government’s Pangasinan Chess Festival.
International Master Oliver Dimakiling from Bohol grabbed the second place and received P20,000 and a trophy. International Masters Joel Pimentel and Jan Emmanuel Garcia, both from Manila, finished third and fourth receiving P15,000 and P10,000, respectively.
Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Manila dominated the children category taking home P7,000 and a trophy.
Daryl Unix Samantilla also of Manila finished second bringing home P5,000 and medal while Fernando Mendoza and Dale Bernardo finished third and fourth receiving P3,000 and 2,000 plus medals respectively.
