Filipino National Master (NM) Carlo Lorena topped the 2013 Battle Chess Selangorku II held in Selangor, Malaysia.
Lorena outclassed FIDE Master (FM) Anas Nazreen Bakri of Malaysia in the final round to wrap up his campaign with an unbeaten record.
He collected a total output of 6.5 points; good enough to rule the seven-round tournament participated in by some 140 chess players.
NMs Nelson Villanueva and Efren Bagamasbad, and untitled Eden Diano of the Philippines, and FM Ronnie Lim and unranked Jax Hong, Zaidan Zulkipli and Evan Timothy Capel of Malaysia finished in a seven-way tie for the No. 2 spot with six points each.
But Villanueva took the runner-up honors by virtue of superior tiebreak points.
Recently, Team Philippines also dominated a chess tournament in Malaysia, winning the 33rd Astro Merdeka Rapid Open Team Chess Championship-10th Malaysian Chess Festival 2013 held in Kuala Lumpur.
