The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Board affirmed that Ateneo de Manila University head coach Bo Perasol must serve out his one-game suspension for violating league rules when his wards play against the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers next Wednesday, September 18. Ateneo and UST are battling it out for the last Final Four slot.
UAAP secretary Malou Isip clarified that the latest declaration was not a new suspension.
A UAAP rule says “the presence of a suspended coach, manager, assistant manager, statistician, scorers, masseurs, etc. and those listed as members of the team shall not be allowed in the bench or venue during the period of suspension. A violation of the condition of the suspension shall result in the forfeiture of the game where such suspended team official or member was found present.”
Perasol, who was then serving a one-game suspension, was present at the Mall of Asia Arena when Ateneo scored a 77-72 win over University of the East (UE) on September 8.
The result of the Ateneo-UE game, however, won’t be forfeited.
Meanwhile, all other suspended players who were present in the venue during their respective games will get a warning. Another violation of the same nature means game forfeiture, according to the UAAP Board.
At present, Ateneo is in fifth place with a 7-6 card while UST has a 7-5 mark for solo fourth. They are behind early semifinalists National University (10-4), Far Eastern University (10-4) and De La Salle University (9-4).
Action resumes on Saturday with La Salle facing UST at 4 p.m. and UE meeting Adamson University at 2 p.m. at the MOA Arena.
The final day of the elimination round will be on Wednesday pitting University of the Philippines against UE at 2 p.m. and Ateneo against UST at 4 p.m. also at the MOA Arena.
