No need to waste your time and money. Your win is guaranteed.
So says outgoing Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson who advised Team PNoy that he was guaranteeing their win in the Ilocos region, specifically in places which are considered his bailiwick.
Team PNoy campaign manager and Sen. Franklin Drilon made the disclosure on Wednesday considering that Team PNoy is yet to chart a campaign sortie in the Ilocos Norte and Sur provinces, a known turf of the Marcoses and Singsons, respectively.
“I have personally spoken to Chavit Singson and he promised me that a substantial majority of the Team PNoy will win in Ilocos Sur. In fact, he told me, huwag na kayong pumunta sa Ilocos Sur, ako ng bahala doon (You should not go to Ilocos Sur anymore, I will take care of it),” Drilon said in a press conference.
Ilocos Sur has 372,000 registered voters. On the mother hand, Ilocos Norte, which is the hometown of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, has a voting population of 401,000.
President Benigno Aquino 3rd’s father, the late Sen. Benigno Aquino, Jr., was the staunchest critic of then President Marcos’ martial law policy. Such stance resulted in his assassination in 1983 at the Manila International Airport.
Singson, on the other hand, once served as the National Security Adviser for former President Gloria Arroyo. Singson’s appointment was largely because of his role in the ouster of ex-president Joseph Estrada in 2001 wherein he exposed Estrada’s getting kickbacks from jueteng or illegal numbers game operations.
Drilon argued that Team PNoy is not deliberately avoiding Ilocos provinces in their campaign schedule because aside from Singson’s vow of support, Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos also promised support for Team PNoy since the Nacionalista Party which she is a part of is with the Team PNoy coalition.
The support of Singson and Marcos, Drilon said, is evident with the results of the surveys wherein at least nine of 12 Team PNoy Senate bets are landing in the top 12 in the Ilocos provinces, including the President’s cousin, Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino 4th.
“He [Singson] assured me that he will carry a substantial majority of the Team PNoy, and we are confident that our coalition with various political parties would hold. The campaign schedule has nothing to do with her [Imee] being a Marcos,” Drilon pointed out.
Team PNoy, a coalition led by President Aquino’s Liberal Party, only made campaign stops in Pangasinan, La Union and Baguio for its Northern Luzon campaign leg.
But in closing, Drilon won’t say that Team PNoy won’t woo the voters of the Ilocos provinces for good.
“We are still reviewing the schedule,” Drilon said.
