No need to overreact

The global terror alert issued by the US State Department a couple of days ago has repercussions that will almost certainly affect the Philippines.

While Americans have been warned against traveling to predominantly Islamic nations, the fact that there is a region of the country that is dominated by our Muslim brothers means that the Philippines will also be considered a danger zone.

It’s not.

The people of the big island of Mindanao will again have to remind one and all that the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) does not comprise all of the Philippines’ south. The region actually occupies only a small portion of the entire Mindanao.

For the longest time, the folks at Davao City and Davao province have been frustrated each time something terrible happens in Mindanao, especially ARMM; global news stories are datelined Davao, even of the events occur kilometers away.

In fact, the US should take note that the ARMM is a self-governing area which hardly affects the operations of the national government. American businessmen and tourists are generally safe throughout the country. Besides, the US embassy already knows which parts of the Philippines should be avoided by Americans at all cost, and this includes the worst parts of Metro Manila.

The government should not overreact to the US global terror alert.

The Philippine National Police should only be made aware that there could be threats to the nation’s security and that Westerners are potential targets. Otherwise, the situation should be business as usual.
