No need to steal the boyfriend’s watch

Untitled-2Long before it became a trend, Fossil knew that women love wearing oversized watches.
How so? Because the American lifestyle brand has always observed how women tend to be “a little tomboyish.” As a brand executive said in a 2014 article in Women’s Wear Daily ( “Our women are a little tomboyish. She wears her boyfriend’s watch not just because it looks good but because it’s easy to read.”

With the tomboyish lass in mind, Fossil prolongs the oversized watch trend with the launch of the all new “(Her) Boyfriend Watch” for the 2015 Fall season.  Welcomed with a bang in the Philippines, Metro Manila’s stylish “tomboys” came in full force to Fossil’s flagship boutique in Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong City to celebrate the collection.

“We’ve always been doing boyfriend watches. It was kind of inspired by women stealing her boyfriend’s watch because they like wearing something chunky,” Alisha Shroff, senior regional marketing manager of Fossil Asia Pacific, told The Manila Times. “Now it has become such a trend, but if you look at our collection in the past 30 years, we’ve always had chunky boyfriend watches. And [with this new collection], we are just building on that platform.”

Leading the collection is the Original Boyfriend that has all the essential elements of a traditional tomboy style. It comes with a chronograph style encased in a spacious 38-mm, rose gold case with three functional dials.

Giving it a vintage appeal is the authentic leather strap that gets softer and looks better throughout time—thanks to Fossil’s rich heritage with leather goods. For the Philippine market, three colors will be introduced namely cedar, navy, and brown.

“The vintage aesthetic is really very important for us since it is the core of our brand,” noted Shroff adding that the brand hails from Richardson, Texas.

A more tomboyish choice comes in Perfect Boyfriend with thicker leather straps in earthy colors and a bigger 39-mm stainless steel case. But making it truly “hers” is a rose gold top ring. A limited edition is in yellow gold with camouflage accents, while a manlier option has stainless strap.

Oversized becomes ultra-feminine with other styles like Jacqueline in navy leather strap with white and rose gold face, and olive leather strap with stainless steel and black face; or Tailor with a seven-link bracelet, classic steel plating and an eye-catching spirographic dial.

Men’s collections
Besides the watches for women, Fossil in the Philippines also introduced its new designs for men led by the “(His) Everyday” line, highlighted by the time-honored Grant collection.

The Grant watch is updated with modern Roman numeral markers and materials like stainless steel and soft leather. Bits, bolts and rich brown shades inspired by aged bourbon barrels are what makes the Grant watch a classic, made to get better with time.

For Shroff, something to watch out for is Fossil’s mechanical timepiece present in the Modern Machine collection. This is a black stainless steel case and strap with a mechanical movement wound by a built-in rotor that swings around its axis by the motion of wearer’s arm. Definitely macho, its round case size is at enormous 50 mm while its strap is at 24 mm.

Another option for this style is the automatic watch with oak barrel leather.

The said collection also capitalizes on the military trend for the Fall season. This rugged theme is very evident in two watches, one in camo-inflected steel casing and stainless steel strap, and the other in camo-ring and brown leather strap.

Leather goods
Finally, the launch at the Fossil flagship store in the Philippines also proudly presented key items from the brand’s Fall 2015 leather collection. One of which, according to Shroff, is the satchel-silhouette Preston for women.

Inspired by vintage binocular cases and camera bags from the 50s and 60s, the crossbody bag a mix of modern lines with mid-century styling, with expandable structure, zip-around gussets and important crossbody strap.

For men, introduced are messenger bags, backpacks and totes, as well as leather wallets with the latest RFID-blocking technology. This feature protects the important ATM and credit cards from being swiped of important personal information.
