TO ensure that traffic enforcers will not leave their posts even to answer the call of nature during the Feast of the Black Nazarene, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will distribute diapers to its personnel who will be deployed on the streets on January 9.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino on Wednesday said adult diapers will be given to traffic enforcers, especially those who may not have access to portalets.
According to Tolentino, the portalets may not even be enough for the millions of people who are expected to attend the event.
The MMDA chief said even if traffic enforcers were allowed access to portalets, they would have to queue up and, in the process, leave their stations for several minutes.
Tolentino added that the diapers can absorb up to four rounds of urination.
He said the first batch of 2,000 adult diapers will be distributed today.
The MMDA constables will start guarding Nazarene devotees tonight during the vigil at Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park (Luneta in Manila).
The MMDA chief said they will also distribute diapers to personnel who will be deployed during the visit of Pope Francis next week.
“We will test this (diapers project) during the feast of the Nazarene and if it proves effective we will also do the same during the papal visit,” Tolentino added.
