• No room for extremists in Bangsamoro – MILF

PIKIT, NORTH COTABATO: Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Vice Chairman for Political Affairs Ghazali Jaafar assured participants at the public forum here over the weekend that the “Bangsamoro government will not tolerate extremism.”

This is in line with the wishes of Archbishop Orlando Cardinal Quevedo whose search for peace in Mindanao began in 1964.

Earlier in the international interfaith conference in Cotabato City, Quevedo said he told the MILF and the Bangsamoro Transition Commission to address religious extremism—one of the new challenges that the country and the proposed Bangsamoro autonomous government should address.

The MILF and the government recently signed the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) in Malacañang on March 27. It was envisioned to end the decades-long conflict in Mindanao and create a new autonomous region. However, other insurgence groups remain a threat in the country, particularly in Mindanao.

Sudibyo Markus, a Muslim activist and member of the Mu–hammadiyah in Indonesia, said extremists are persons or groups who misinterpret the teachings of the Koran, the religious text of Islam. They reportedly follow an extreme or radical ideology to justify their acts.

These groups are known for bombings, kidnappings, robbing and beheading activities. They completely reject human-made laws like the democratic system of government and believe that a Jihad or Holy War is the only solution to establish a new order.

Jaafar said the MILF, through the new autonomous government, is ready to prevent extremism to protect national security.

“The Bangsamoro authority and leaders will not allow anybody, anyone or any groups to destroy peace within the Bangsamoro territory,” he said.

“The Bangsamoro government is a democratic government where the rights of the people are guaranteed and everybody can enjoy religious freedom,” he concluded.

All the best to the upcoming Bangasamoro Government. It has huge task to do esp. in preventing the growth of extremism. All sectors of the society should assist the Bangsamoro sub-state in whatever capacity so that it becomes a functioning, effective and successful state.

    2. I trust that the newly signed CAB of the Bangsa Moro Entity which will soon become a reality, will address and carry out all the aspirations of the people of Mindanao, which they have waited for so long, with all the lives lost in the process. I hope God will provide a venue for those who are against this peace agreement to participate in the process to accomplish a vision for unity in order for all the people to enjoy their new found freedom. May God bless us all.
