ILOILO CITY: There is absolutely no collection of school fees upon enrolment of school children in the public elementary and high schools—the Department of Education is strictly implementing this no-collection policy to encourage parents to bring and enroll their children. This was stressed by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog of Iloilo City upon being informed by Iloilo City division of schools superintendent Nelly Valerio of the existing DepEd policy. Mabilog said the city is supporting 26 public elementary schools and 15 high schools on top of the barangay daycare centers and kindergarten. DepEd reiterated its no-collection policy in all public schools in preparation for the opening of classes on June 3, 2013.Tuition is free in all 45,000 public elementary and high schools nationwide, but organizations like the Philippine Red Cross, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines annually collect voluntary contributions.
