THREE unidentified gunmen killed the chief of the Civil Security Unit (CSU) of North Cotabato and his companion in front of a Catholic church in a remote village in Arakan town oon Sunday morning.
Reports reaching the PNP National Operation Center in Camp Crame identified the victims as CSU chief Bernabe Abanilla and Degul Semillano
Arakan chief of police, Chief Insp. Felix Fornan said that Abanilla and Semillano just alighted from a vehicle and were about to enter the church compound when the gunmen onboard a motorbike opened fire at them.
Abanilla was declared dead-on-arrival at the hospital from gunshot wounds in the head and body.
Investigators recovered .45 caliber pistol shells at the crime scene.
Meanwhile, North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Mendoza condemned the killing of Abanilla and Semillano, while urging authorities to expedite the investigation.
“It is a great loss for a man who was a dedicated family man and devoted to his work. There is deeper reason for his death as this is not the first attempt on his life,” Mendoza said in a statement furnished to The Manila Times.
“We need to thoroughly investigate the reasons and the motives and the men behind this criminal act. Justice must be served and given to all victims of criminal killings in Cotabato, including the death of Mr. Abanilla,” she added.
