Nov. 11 declared as Palawan Underground River Day

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino 3rd has declared November 11 as “Puerto Princesa Underground River Day”.

Aquino issued the declaration through Proclamation No. 816 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on July 7 after being chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

“Such recognition brought great honor and acclaim not only to the City of Puerto Princesa and the Province of Palawan but to the entire nation as well,” the Presi- dent said.

Aquino also encouraged all heads of government agencies, local government units, and other sectors “to extend their support and participate in the programs and activities to be held for this purpose”.

In November 2011, Puerto Princesa Underground River made it to the provisional list of the New7wonders.

Apart from its actual river, Puerto Princesa Underground River boasts of gigantic stalactites formations and picturesque “caves”.

President Aquino himself campaigned for Puerto Princesa Underground River’s victory, noting that its inclusion in the New7Wonders would not only “bolster a sense of national pride” but will also provide employment.

“We must also remember that the tourists we can potentially attract will redound to thousands of employment opportunities; our success here will ultimately breed success for Filipinos everywhere,” Aquino said.
