Cannes International Film Festival Best Actress Jaclyn Jose was still on cloud 9 when I talked to her shortly before midnight of Tuesday, the day she arrived from the prestigious festival. She complained that she hasn’t had a decent sleep since she won but her excitement to go home to share the honor with Filipinos outweighs her feeling of tiredness.
“Nag-sink-in lang sa akin ang lahat the moment I stepped out of the plane. ‘Yung mga kababayan natin we’re all smiling and they were all greeting me. And that’s the only time I realized how big an accomplishment I was bringing home with me. I really felt so good,” Jaclyn told me during our lengthy talk at the GMA Network Center.
Only a handful of people know that Jaclyn almost backed out of “Ma’Rosa.” It was because she was quite overweight and Direk Brillante Mendoza thought it would be better if she loses some weight for the movie. The award-winning director even gave Ma. Isabel Lopez, one of the stars in the film, the task to help Jaclyn shed off some pounds to which Maribel agreed and gave Jaclyn a diet juice.
On her part, Jaclyn thought of backing out if she would really have to go on strict diet for weight reduction. “Hindi ko kayang magpapayat, ang sarap kayang kumain. So I thought of talking to Direk Dante and just back out of the movie. But then I thought of Andi. If I back out, she will be replaced too. I have always wanted her to experience attending international film festivals. When I was her age, rumarampa na ko sa kung saan-saang festivals abroad and I want her to have a taste of those beautiful experiences.
“So I talked to Direk Dante and natuloy na nga kami ni Andi. Pwede naman kasing hindi ako payat dahil ang role ko hindi naman drug user. I only sell drugs. At nagawa na namin ang movie at ito na nga, I won,” Jaclyn narrated.
The day after her arrival from Cannes, Jaclyn reported early for her taping for GMA afternoon soap “The Millionaire’s Daughter.” She thought it would be an ordinary taping day for her and her co-stars until lunch break came.
She was having lunch with the other stars of the soap when the door opened. There standing were the members of the production staff with flowers, cakes and more food to celebrate her victory. As they say, it’s not everyday that you have a star who wins Best Actress in Cannes.
“I was so surprised! I was not expecting anything. I feel so happy. When they asked me to blow the candles on the cake, I wished that our show would be extended because the people in the show have grown closer. We’re family already,” the acclaimed actress beamed.

Actually, among the members of the cast of “The Millionaire’s Wife,” it was not only Jaclyn who got an international award. Sid Lucero just won Best Actor at the Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival for the indie movie “Toto.” So, it was a double celebration for the show’s people during their taping.
Sid, however, prefers to downplay his winning an international award. He said it was a surprise for him but he is very thankful. “I was driving when our Direk JP called and told me that our movie won and I won the Best Actor. I could not believe at first because it was a comedy film festival. I was really not expecting,” the actor said.
The award, added Sid, inspires him to work harder, continue on doing indie projects. In fact, he is heading for California and then New York to attend two festivals for two different indie movies that he has finished.

It is not an easy pregnancy for Mariel Rodriguez and her husband Robin Padilla is attesting to this. The action star says it breaks his heart whenever he sees his wife’s thighs with the marks of needles they have to inject to her because of the diabetes induced by her pregnancy.
Mariel is three and a half months pregnant and she is extra careful. She doesn’t want to again undergo that traumatic experience of losing her baby. “The doctor actually wants me to do bed rest but I said I can do light chores like now. Naka-upo lang naman kami ni Robin dito,” Mariel said during the press conference for Sogo chain of hotels where they were launched as the newest endorsers.
Now that Mariel is past her first trimester, they are more confident that everything will be good with her pregnancy until she gives birth. They have even chosen names for the baby. “If it’s a girl, she will be Maria because I have Maria in my name. If it’s a boy, he will have Fernando in his name, after Robin’s second name. Robin’s full name is Robinhood Fernando Carino Padilla,” Mariel enthused.
They are also scheduled to travel out of the country next month. “Papunta akong Dubai and then Mariel will follow. Susunduin niya ko doon then pupunta kami sa Netherlands. Iiwan niya ko roon at babalik siya sa Pilipinas. She has to prepare para pumunta sa Amerika at doon manganak,” Robin said.

A young mestizo actor feels so bad that he was beaten to the draw by a moreno co-actor over a young actress. The mestizo actor was already planning to court the young actress but he was told by their mutual friends that the moreno actor is already dating the apple of his eye. From the looks of it, the young moreno actor is succeeding because the actress is said to be getting very fond now of him. And the mestizo actor? Sulking at home singing “Sayang.”
