NPA rebel dies in Surigao clash

A SUSPECTED communist rebel was killed after government security forces clashed with a group of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in a village in Malimono town in Surigao del Norte.

The Caraga Police Information Officer, Chief Insp. Charity Galvez, said combined troops of the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) and the Philippine Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion (IB) were conducting a rescue operation for four policemen abducted on July 24, 2016 when they chanced upon a group of around 15 NPA rebels in Barangay Binacuran.

An ensuing firefight between the groups lasted for about 20 minutes on Monday that resulted in the killing of Junard Quinto Kasoy of Purok 6, Barangay Hanagdong in Malimono town.

Kasoy’s body was recovered with an AK-47 assault rifle and five magazines.

Government forces also recovered from the encounter site two improvised explosive devices and supplies of rice belonging to the rebels who quickly withdrew after the clash.
