A New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed during a clash with government troops in Cauayan, Negros Occidenta, on Wednesday, reports said. Lt. Col. Harold Anthony Pascua, commander of the Philippine Army’s 79 Infantry Battalion, said the slain guerrilla was identified by his former comrade-in-arms as Tata Sarona. An M-14 rifle was found near his body. The firefight occured in Sitio Cabanbanan, Barangay Camalandaan, Cauayan when a band of NPA rebels opened fire at government troops conducting community security patrol. The shootout lasted about10 minutes. No one among the soldiers was hurt during the gunbattle.
