NPA rebel leader apprehended in Palawan


GOVERNMENT security forces arrested a New People’s Army (NPA) rebel leader in Palawan and his two henchmen early Sunday in an operation in a remote village in the province, police reports said on Monday.

Reports reaching the Philippine National Police operations center in Camp Crame identified the arrested NPA leader as Dionisio Almonte alias “Inol/Maeng,” while the names of his two henchmen were not disclosed.

The reports said that Almonte and his men were apprehended at around 7 a.m. after police served an arrest warrant against them at Sitio Naonao, Barangay Port Barton, San Vicente, Palawan.

The three were arrested by operatives of the police’s Regional Intelligence Unit 4B; Navy commandos and elements of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 4 following internal security operations in the area, reports said.

Recovered from the possession of the three rebels were high-powered firearms consisting of eight shotguns; two Uzi submachine pistols; a .50 machine gun; M16 rifle and bomb making materials.

The reports said that three rebels remain in the custody of government security forces in Palawan and are undergoing tactical interrogation and investigation.
