NPA rebels burn construction firm’s equipment in Quezon

CAMP SANTOS, Calauag, Quezon: Suspected members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) on Saturday evening burned equipment of a construction firm in Barangay Tanag Ibaba, in Lopez town, the military reported.

Major General Rhoderick Parayno, Second Division commander, said a report from Brig. Gen. Lenard Agustin, 201st Infantry Brigade commander, showed that some 10 NPA rebels torched RTY Construction Company’s payloader, three ELF trucks and a cement mixer.

Parayno added that the rebels have repeatedly forced the construction company to pay “revolutionary” tax.

He ordered Lt. Col. Ely Tono, 85th Infantry Battalion commander, to conduct pursue operations against the rebels.

He at the same time called on the communist guerrillas to lay down their arms and join their former comrades who surrendered earlier.

Agustin said the attack was designed to spread terror to other construction companies to give in to the NPA rebels’ “extortion” demands.
