The Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) has formally endorsed the candidacies of Senators Grace Poe and Francis “Chiz” Escudero.
NPC President and House Deputy Speaker Giorgidi Aggabao on Monday said the NPC, the country’s second largest political party, made the decision after an intensive consultation among its members.
“We wish to announce that we formally adopt Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares and Sen. Francis Escudero as our candidates for President and Vice President, respectively. Their platform is anchored on inclusivity, and second, the candidates’ clear intention to build on gains rather than simply accept the status quo or signal a return to old practices, or hastily and radically subject the nation to a new and unpredictable cycle devoid of continuity,” Aggabao explained.
The NPC endorsement will virtually allow Poe and Escudero, who are running as independents, to beat the much touted machinery of the ruling Liberal Party.
“Compared with previous elections, this [are], by the far, the election[s]where we will field the largest number of candidates with 4,129. They will be fielded in various positions, from Batanes, all the way to Sulu, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi. That even excludes the eight party-list groups allied with us, as well the candidates’ supporters. And so we feel strongly confident that with our size, we will be able to significantly support Senator Grace,” Aggabao pointed out.
“We feel the tandem of Sen. Grace Poe and Sen. Chiz Escudero are the best candidates and that they will embody the principles of an ideal President and Vice President: Malinis, matapang, masipag, matulungin [Untainted, courageous, hardworking and helpful],” he said.
Aggabao added that NPC members will follow the party stand even if former Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco earlier announced that he will be supporting Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Cojuangco, who is running for Pangasinan governor, is a son of business tycoon Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, founder of the NPC.
“Absolutely [people will toe the line]. We have reached this after intensive consultation among our members. We have not talked about sanctions. But let me state 90 percent of our members have said yes, they are endorsing Senator Chiz and Senator Poe,” Aggabao said.
