Taytay Rizal: The vice presidential bid of Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos is not affected by the decision of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) to endorse the tandem of Senators Grace Poe and Francis “Chiz” Escudero.
Marcos, however, said he is hoping to get the support of NPC members, particularly from the rank and file.
He noted that NPC founder Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, his godfather, told him that party members are free to select the vice presidential candidate they want to support.
Marcos added that some party leaders may have decided in favor of the Poe-Escudero tandem but he is banking on his strong connections with the regular members of the party.
Some top leaders of NPC had raised the hands of Marcos.
On Monday, in Antipolo City, party president and Rizal Vice Gov. Frisco San Juan endorsed Marcos in the presence of other leaders of the province led by political kingpin former governor Casimiro Ynarez, his wife Nini, and son Antipolo City Mayor Jun.
“I have plenty of friends in the party. I already talked to them. I will talk to others too,” Marcos said.
Liberal Party standard bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd also questioned the NPC move, saying he has been in touch with top NPC officials who are yet to make up their minds on who to support.
“Kausap ko ang liderato ng NPC, at nananatiling wala silang pili sa pagkapangulo. Ito ay pili ng iilang miyembro ng NPC, at meron din namang mga NPC, mahigit dalawampu ang mga miyembro ng NPC na gobernador at na congressman ang sumusuporta sa Daang Matuwid, Mar-Leni tandem (I am in talks with NPC leaders, and they are yet to endorse a presidential candidate. What has been announced was just a choice of a few of their members. There are also NPC members, around 20 of them who are governors and lawmakers, who support the Mar-Leni tandem),” Roxas told reporters.
NPC spokesman Quezon Rep. Mark Enverga said on Monday that 90 percent of NPC members are supportive of the Poe-Escudero tandem.
But Roxas disputed this.
“I was told that such is not the party-stand of the NPC,” he said.
He noted that South Cotabato Rep. Pedro Acharon and Negros Oriental Rep. George Arnaiz are supportive of his candidacy.
Camarines Sur Rep. Wimpy Fuentebella has also gone on record that he will be supporting Vice President Jejomar Binay, a stance that was espoused by former Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco who is running for Pangasinan governor under the NPC banner.
