Reigning champion National University (NU) Pep Squad won the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Cheerdance crown for the third consecutive year on Saturday before a crowd of 25, 388 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
NU presenting a “Caveman” theme this season, garnered a total of 668 points to take home the P340, 000 cash prize.
“We double our effort and we have faith in God that we’re going to win,” the teary-eyed NU Pep Squad coach Ghicka Bernabe, who was a former Far Eastern University (FEU) cheer¬dance team member, told the press during the post-event interview.
“We started our three to four hours of practice last June and we studied every routine,” she added. “It is hard to defend the title and we are very happy that we’ve won again. If UP and UST could win consecutive titles in the past, NU can also do it.”
NU was the fourth team to present its routine.
“We are encouraged by our coaches not to give up,” said NU team captain Claire Cristobal. “We refused to surrender in the middle of the fight. We just followed their [coaches]instructions and we are so happy with the result.”
University of Santo Tomas (UST) Salinggawi Dance Troupe claimed the first runner-up honor with 651.5 points while University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad took the second runner-up plum with 610.5 points.
