National University (NU) shoots for a historic five straight championship in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 cheerdance competition today at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Competition starts at 2 p.m. with National U gunning for an unprecedented five-peat.

The defending champion takes the floor first followed by De La Salle University, Adamson University, Far Eastern University (FEU), University of the East (UE), University of the Philippines (UP), University of Sto. Tomas (UST) and Ateneo De Manila University.

Last season, the NU Pep Squad wowed the 17,000-strong crowd at the Araneta Coliseum with a stunning routine that resulted in 711 points en route to its fourth consecutive crown.

It was only the second four-peat in the 22-year history of the contest, next to UST’s reign from 2002 to 2005.

The FEU Cheering Squad finished second with 658.5 points and Adamson Pep Squad third with 655 markers.

UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe finished fourth with 650 points followed by UE Pep Squad (645), La Salle Animo Squad (560.5) and Ateneo Blue Babble Batallion (512).

After skipping last season’s competition, traditional powerhouse UP Pep Squad returns with vengeance.

The eight-time champion opted not to participate last year citing that the event was handled by the same organizers who managed the competition in 2015, wherein the State U filed a protest following a third place finish behind NU and UST.
