National University will open the second round of eliminations against University of the East (UE) in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.
During their first meeting this season, the Lady Bulldogs survived the Lady Warriors, 62-58, with Gemma Miranda leading the charge with 18 points and 10 rebounds last September 7.
The Lady Bulldogs completed a sweep of the first round after annihilating the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses on Saturday, 103-49.
NU registered more assists with 23 compared to UST’s seven. NU also dominated under the basket, tallying 47 rebounds, 14 more than UST’s 33.
The Lady Bulldogs scored 35 baskets out of 68 attempts while limiting the Growling Tigresses to only 14 baskets out of 53. They also banked on the second chance points with 18 and free throws with 25 out of 33.
The UST Tigresses recorded 44 turnovers compared to NU’s 34, and shot only one from the arc, out of 12.
Miranda and Afril Bernardino top scored NU with double-double performances of 24 points and 10 rebounds, plus 22 markers and 10 assists, respectively. Ria Nabalan added 12 more points, while Jack Animam and Je-anne Camelo combined for 22 markers and 18 boards.
For UST, starter Misaela Larosa owned the lone bright spot with 10 points.
After the first round of eliminations, NU sat at the top spot with 7-0, followed by De La Salle University with 6-1, UE with 5-2, and Adamson University with 3-4.
Ateneo de Manila University, UST and Far Eastern University (FEU) were tied with identical 2-5 cards. University of the Philippines (UP) took the last spot with 1-6.
NU’s Miranda led the scoreboard, averaging 18 points per game, while Bernardino got the highest average in assists with 5.4 and in steals with 4.7. Lady Warrior Love Sto. Domingo tallied 11.6 rebounds per game.
The Tigresses will try to snap their two-game losing skid against the Lady Maroons at 8 a.m., while the Lady Bulldogs and UE Lady Warriors will clash at 10 a.m. The Lady Eagles will face the Lady Tamaraws at 1 p.m. The Lady Archers will complete the quadruple header as they go against the Lady Falcons at 3 p.m.
