NU girls complete 4-peat


NATIONAL University turned back University of Santo Tomas, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 for a rare girls’ four-peat in the UAAP Season 80 high school volleyball tournament on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Center.

The Bullpups were in the zone, pouncing the Junior Tigresses with their solid attacking and sharp serves to register a two-game sweep of the best-of-three Finals.

Sheena Toring delivered the championship point for NU with a service ace.

“The fourth is the most difficult one,” said Bullpups coach Babes Castillo. “True-blue trabaho talaga. We are here to inspire.”

Earlier, UST rallied from two sets down to beat Far Eastern University-Diliman, 18-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-5, to claim its first-ever boys crown.

The Tiger Cubs, ranked No. 3 in the playoffs, won the series, 2-0, with Jaron Requinton as the Finals MVP.

Requinton, who is also the 1st Best Middle Blocker, and Efraem Dimacu­langan are among the graduating players for UST, which finally emerged from the shadows of powerhouses University of the East and NU.

“This is a big honor and blessing for us,” said Tiger Cubs assistant coach John Abella.

Meanwhile, NU’s Mhicaela Belen formally claimed the season MVP award before the start of Game 2.

Finals MVP Faith Nisperos, who is also a two-time MVP winner, Joyme Cagande and Alyssa Solomon took theas named 1st Best Outside Hitter, Best Setter and Rookie of the Year awards, respectively.

UST’s Eya Laure got the Best Opposite Spiker award, while other awardees were UST’s Imee Hernandez (1st Best Middle Blocker) and Det Pepito (Best Libero), Angel Carmino of De La Salle-Zobel (2nd Best Outside Hitter) and Justine Jazareno (Best Server) and Alexis Miner of FEU-Diliman (2nd Best Middle Blocker),

FEU-Diliman’s Mark Calado collected the MVP and Best Outside Hitter awards in the boys division while CJ Segui of UST was named Rookie of the Year.
