NU girls play FEU-Diliman in UAAP high school volleyball opener


NATIONAL University opens its quest for a three-peat in the girls division against Far Eastern University-Diliman today in the UAAP Season 79 high school volleyball tournament at the Adamson University Gym.

The Bullpups and the Baby Tamaraws play in the first game of a three-game bill at 7:30 p.m.

Last season’s runner-up University of Santo Tomas clashes with UP Integrated School at 9 a.m., while De La Salle-Zobel takes on University of the East at 10:30 p.m.

NU remains fancied to win behind Season 77 MVP Faith Nisperos, last year’s Rookie of the Year winner Thea Gagate, Sheena Toring and ace setter Joyme Cagande.

But the Bullpups are expected to face stiff opposition from their fierce rival Junior Tigresses, who are spearheaded by reigning MVP Eya Laure, Maji Mangulabnan, Imee Hernandez and Det Pepito.

The Junior Lady Spikers, third placers last season, will try to move on without scorer Jules Samonte, who is now playing for Ateneo in college.

Event host Adamson University takes an opening day bye and will make its debut tomorrow against UST at 9 a.m.

In the boys division, titleholder NU and UE collide in a rematch of last year’s Finals at 4:30 p.m.

De La Salle -Zobel and FEU-Diliman tussle at 12 noon, followed by the Ateneo-UST game at 1:30 p.m., and the UPIS-Adamson match at 3:30 p.m.

The Baby Falcons are making their debut in the boys division, now completing an eight-school cast.
