NATIONAL University completed a golden double as its women’s team bagged its second straight championship a 6-0 sweep Friday in the UAAP Season 80 taekwondo tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Lady Bulldogs capped their domination with a 5-2 decision of University of the Philippines.
The victory moments came after NU men’s squad captured its first-ever title by sweeping all of its six bouts in the three-day tournament.
Flyweight Rheza Aragon was named the season MVP, while the other Lady Bulldogs’ gold medal came from bantamweight Baby Jessica Canabal.
Welterweight Arven Alcantara, a silver medalist in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, took home the tournament MVP honors, leading NU’s three-gold haul.
Also emerging victorious for the Bulldogs were flyweight Noel Sabillano and middle-heavyweight Dave Cea.
Emerging from the shadows of traditional powerhouses University of Santo Tomas (UST) and La Salle, NU has come into age in taekwondo.
Behind featherweight Pauline Lopez, finweight IT Bermejo and welterweight Danielle Morales, Ateneo finished second in women’s with a 4-2 record. The Lady Eagles, who surpassed their second place finish last year, bested the Tigresses, 4-3, in the finale.
The Lady Maroons also wound up at 4-2, but settled for third as they lost to the Katipunan-based jins via the tiebreak.
Led by featherweight Joshua Lazaro, UP clinched second place while UST, with lightweight Aries Capispisan spearheading the charge, took third place.
The Fighting Maroons and the Growling Tigers were actually tied at 4-2, but the Diliman-based squad won the tiebreaker.
La Salle’s Alvaro Aranton and Ateneo’s Morales took the Rookie of the Year honors in their respective divisions.
