NATIONAL University (NU) formally eliminated University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Final Four race with a 66-51 win over University of the Philippines (UP) in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Growling Tigers, who lost to reigning champion De La Salle University Saturday, 60-67, are in the sixth spot with a 5-7 slate, but the eighth victory of the Bulldogs in 12 games formally eliminated them.
Alfred Aroga had a monster performance of 18 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, while Troy Rosario added nine points along with 10 rebounds and five assists for the Bulldogs. NU out-rebounded UP, 43-29.
Playmaker Gelo Alolino and forward Glenn Khobuntin also contributed nine points apiece also for NU.
“Everything will start on our defense and everything evolves to it,” said NU head coach Eric Altamirano. “Defense is our identity since from the start of the season. Our goal so far is win the games that we can win in order to qualify.”
The Fighting Maroons absorbed their 12th loss this season. Their last game will be against winless Adamson University.
