NU opens bid in style, DLS-Zobel falls


NATIONAL University opened its quest for a back-to-back championship with a 104-54 whipping of University of the East over the weekend in the UAAP Season 79 juniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center.

John Lloyd Clemente had 21 points, four rebounds and three assists while Rhayyan Amsali, now the starting center with the graduation of Justine Baltazar, added 18 points and six rebounds for the Bullpups.

Last season’s second placers De La Salle-Zobel was not as fortunate as it bowed to Far Eastern University-Diliman.

Jack Gloria came through with 15 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals while Xyrus Torres chipped in 11 points as the Baby Tamaraws downed the Junior Archers, 66-56.

Former champion Ateneo, behind Samjosef Belangel’s 20-point and 15-rebound effort, turned back University of Santo Tomas, 66-55, while Adamson, with Carl Tamayo and Florencio Serrano combining for 28 points, overwhelmed UP Integrated School, 82-59.

De La Salle-Zobel lost Aljun Melecio, Brent Paraiso and Marco Sario, who all moved to college Action resumes today with another four-game bill at the San Juan venue.
