• NU Pep Squad eyes third straight crown


    uaap-cheerdanceDefending champion National University (NU) Pep Squad will be gunning for its third straight title in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 Cheerdance Competition scheduled at 2 p.m. today at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

    The NU Pep Squad will be the fourth performer while former champion University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad takes center stage first.

    De La Salle University Animo Squad will be the second team to perform followed by Ateneo de Manila University Blue Babble Battalion (third), University of the East Pep Squad (fifth), Adamson University Pep Squad (sixth), former titlist Far Eastern University Cheering Squad (seventh) and University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe (eighth).

    In 2014, NU bagged the crown after scoring 677.5 points while UP (658) and UST (625) settled for second and third, respectively.

    Adamson was fourth (600) followed by FEU (599.5), La Salle (567), UE (503) and Ateneo (494).

    UP and UST are the winningest teams in the league with eight titles each.

    UP won in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 while UST dominated the 1994, 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 editions.

    NU (2013 and 2014) and FEU (1998 and 2009) are the two other winning teams in the 20-year staging of the annual competition.

    FEU, meanwhile, will be defending its crown in the Group Stunts category.

    Last year, FEU garnered 258.5 points to beat second-placer UST (251) and third-placer NU (239.5).

    The cheerdance competition will be judged based on tumbling, stunts, tosses, pyramids and dance.
