TUBIGON town in disaster-hit Bohol province and Ozamiz City in Misamis Occidental were honored by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) for their successful and outstanding performances in nutrition program management for six consecutive years. The Nutrition Honor Award is the highest award given to a local government unit.

The NNC Awards Ceremony paid tribute to the hardwork of local nutrition committees headed by the local chief executive and assisted by their nutrition action officers and district/city nutrition program coordinators.

The glittering NNC awards for champions coming from all over the country was held at the Philippine International Convention Center recently.

The National Nutrition Award is given to Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) awardees that have consistently shown outstanding performance in efforts for nutrition improvement. They are monitored by a regional nutrition evaluation team and by a national nutrition evaluation team.

Consistent CROWN awardees are given to municipalities/cities that have continuously intensified efforts to improve the nutrition situation through effective management of local nutrition programs. This year, the awards went to Cauayan City, Isabela; Paombong, Bulacan; Mandaluyong City; Mogpog, Marinduque; Gubat, Sorsogon; Jagna, Bohol; Misamis Oriental, Davao del Norte and Bislig City.

Crown Maintenance awards are presented to areas that have outperformed themselves within the first year after being proclaimed a crown awardee. Leading the awardees this year are Vigan City, Quirino province, Tarlac, Toledo City and Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte.

The NNC also gives special recognition to the untiring efforts of barangay volunteers also known as Barangay Nutrition Scholars. These individuals form the band of nutrition and health workers working seriously toward the attainment of nutrition and health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The much-coveted national outstanding barangay nutrition scholar (BNS) award is given to the BNS with outstanding performance in the country because of tirelessly monitoring the nutritional status of the vulnerable and for delivering nutrition services and other related activities. This year, the award went to BNS Felisa Guilingan of Barangay Guinles, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte.

The NNC carries the duty of orchestrating efforts to address problems of hunger and malnutrition. The concerted efforts of government agencies, local government units down to the barangay nutrition scholars are crucial in finding the solutions to the urgent issues of poverty, food security and improper nutrition.

The 10 agencies members of NNC are Department of Health, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Agriculture, Department of Budget and Management, Department of Education, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Trade and Industry and National Economic And Development Authority.

“The awardees are living manifestations of local governments and Barangay Nutrition Scholars who appreciate deeply the importance of good nutrition in the country’s overall development,” emphasized Health Assistant Secretary and NNC Executive Director Maria Bernardita Flores.

Health Undersecretary Janette Loreto-Garin, National Dairy Authority Administrator Grace Cenas, NNC Vice Chair and Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala and Flores handed out the trophies to the winners.

World acclaimed and multi-awarded celebrity couple, Robert Sena and Isay Alvarez, performed during the awarding ceremony while beauty queen and TV personality Venus Raj hosted the event.
