COTABATO CITY: The National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Mindanao-Region 12 honored local government units (LGUs), individuals and groups that contributed to the agency’s advocacy of addressing malnutrition and launched the Philippine Plan of Action on Nutrition (PPAN) over the weekend prior to the awarding rites. Region 12 or Soccsksargen is comprised of the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City. Reginaldo Guillen, nutrition officer of NNC central office, who spoke in behalf of Health Undersecretary and NNC head Maria Bernardita Flores, stressed that “nutrition is not just a health concern, it is everybody’s concern adding that PPAN aims to address two major concerns – “stunting” (pandak) and “wasted” (payat). Guillen said about 60 percent of the country’s 105 million population is in the working sector. Arakan in North Cotabato, Kiamba in Sarangani and Polomolok in South Cotabato were chosen as outstanding municipalities in the province while Barangay New Bohol in Kidapawan City won the contest in Best Gulayan sa Barangay.
