Now on its eighth year, the 2016 Nuvali Dirt Weekend will feature two races on November 11 to 12 at the Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
This year’s race is the only Asian qualifying leg for the 2017 Cross Country Marathon World Championship, which will be held in Germany.
The Top 20 men and women finishers of each round will automatically secure a slot in the world series and can earn points for their international mountain bike marathon series ranking.
“We would like to take this a step further and serve as venue for world-class competitions in order to recognize local talents as well as give our athletes a chance to compete globally,” said Nuvali General Manager John Estacio on Thursday during a news conference at the Hard Rock Cafe in Makati City.
Estacio said it would be the second time for the Philippines to host the qualifiers, which is sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the international governing body on the sport of cycling.
European cyclists from Portugal as well as Asian countries including Japan, Indonesia and Thailand will join the tournament.
“We are excited to be back here. This year, we take the competition up a notch with new and longer routes at 90km from 70km last year which is designed to challenge local and international cycling community with a noteworthy qualifying race,” UCI technical delegate Geoff Kronenburg said.
The other highlight of the event is Nuvali’s signature race, the 35-kilometer Dirt Weekend Cross Country Fun Race, which will have a special “Fat Bike” category.
The fun race features 15-19 years to 50 years old and above categories.
