Offer to ‘rescue’ doomed John Paul II statue

BUDAPEST: A Hungarian mayor has offered to “rescue” a statue of Pope John Paul II set for demolition in France after a court ruled it contravened laws on secularity.  “If France, the country of freedom, doesn’t want it, we’d be happy to put it up here in our town,” Jozsef Michl, mayor of Tata (70 kilometers northwest of Budapest), told AFP by telephone Thursday.
