Oil price hike takes effect, militant groups schedules nationwide protest

AS militant groups are scheduled to conduct their nationwide protest Tuesday, at least three oil companies have implemented their pump price hike.

In their respective statements, Chevron Philippines, Petron Philippines, and Seaoil increased prices on their gasoline products by P1.60 per liter, P1 per liter on kerosene and P.75 per liter on diesel.

The adjustment took effect Tuesday at 6 AM.

According to Petron and Seaoil, the said adjustment “reflects the movements in the international oil market and foreign exchange rate.”

Other oil firms have yet to announce their own price as of press time.

Last Monday, militany group Kilusang Mayo Uno called on the public to join the People’s Protest called “Protestang Bayan vs. Nagtataasang Presyo at Demolisyon,” saying that holding such move is “the only way for Filipinos can have a chance of preventing price hikes and demolition.”

The People’s Protest is targeted to condemn Maynilad and Manila Water for “passing the various expenses to consumers”, the continued rising prices of oil, electricity, fare hikes of LRT and MRT, premium hikes on Social Security System, Philhealth and Pag-Ibig, tuition fee increases, among others.

The said protest will be held less than a week before President Benigno Aquino 3rd’s fourth State Of the Nation Address.
