• One dead in Dinagat Island landslide

ONE person died while another was injured in two separate landslide incidents in a remote mining village in Dinagat Island on Christmas eve, police reports said on Thursday.

Reports reaching the Philippine National Police (PNP) National Operations Center in Camp Crame said that the landslide incidents occurred late Tuesday night at Wellex Mining Site in Purok –4, Barangay Navarro, Basilia town and in Barangay Malinao, Tubajon town.

Reports identified the lone fatality as Edgar Gallardo, 47, while injured was identified Cecyl Penaso, 23. Aside from the two, police said that a certain Joel Bascon, 55, was reported missing after the incident.

Based on initial investigation, the victims were preparing coffee when a nearby elevated stock of soil collapsed due to the heavy rains and covered the victims’ bunkhouse.

Police said Penaso, who sustained minor injuries, was able to run outside while Bascon and Gallardo were trapped inside. Gallardo’s body was recovered by rescue workers the following day. Rescue workers, meanwhile, are still looking for Bascon’s body. ANTHONY VARGAS
