TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte: A holdup man and a security guard were killed in a police assault after a six-hour hostage standoff in Tagum City, Davao del Norte that started at 8 p.m. on Thursday night and ended at 2:00 a. m. Friday.
Davao del Norte Provincial Police Director P/SSupt. Samuel Gadingan said three armed men were supposed to stage a holdup at Makulay Restaurant located on the corner of Pioneer Avenue and the Davao national highway but were forced to take hostages when a police patrol arrived at the vicinity.
The unidentified slain holdup man was left by his two companions and forced to make people in the restaurant as his hostages, dragging the hostage incident to more than six hours, Gadingan said.
The hostage taker shot the restaurant’s security guard wounding him but none of the hostages was reported hurt.
Tagum City Mayor Allan Rellon said that the hostage taker was asked to surrender for five attempts by the designated police negotiator before the crisis committee ordered a SWAT police assault.
The hostage taker fired back at the assaulting team forcing police to shoot him. PNA
